What is Category 1 animal fat?
Category 1 animal fat is derived from Category 1 animal by-products, which are considered the highest risk because raw materials may carry pathogens, chemical residues, or prions (TSE agents).
Because of this risk profile, Category 1 fat is not permitted for use in food, feed, or pet food. Instead, it is directed towards safe disposal routes or controlled energy applications, such as biofuel production.
Why Category 1 is different
The European Union classifies animal by-products into three categories based on public and animal health risk. Category 1 is the most strictly regulated group because it includes high-risk raw materials, which are subject to the highest level of control.
Category 1 materials include:
- Animals suspected or confirmed to have TSE diseases (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies, e.g., BSE “mad cow disease”).
- Pet animals, zoo animals, and circus animals.
- Specified risk material (SRM) such as spinal cords or brains from cattle.
- Fallen stock.
- International catering waste (from planes and ships).
When fat is rendered (processed) from any of these materials, it is classified as Category 1 animal fat.
