Behind the Blend: Category 2 Animal Fat

1 June 2026

What is Category 2 Animal Fat?

Category 2 animal fat is a rendered by-product derived from materials classified under EU animal by-product (ABP) regulations as Category 2. This category includes animal materials that are not suitable for human consumption and are restricted from entering the animal feed chain due to their risk profile.

Through controlled rendering processes, these materials are converted into a fat fraction that can be safely used in technical and industrial applications. The most common end uses include biodiesel production, renewable energy pathways, and certain regulated industrial processes.

Why Category 2 Requires Control

The European Union classifies animal by-products into three categories based on public and animal health risk. CategoCategory 2 animal fat operates within a tightly regulated framework because its classification determines strict limitations on where and how it can be used. Any deviation in handling, documentation, or processing can render the material non-compliant and unusable in its intended applications.

At the same time, the physical and chemical properties of Category 2 fat can vary significantly depending on origin, rendering conditions, and storage. Variations in parameters such as free fatty acids, moisture, impurities, and contamination levels can directly impact processing efficiency, storage stability, and downstream yields.

Because of the regulatory sensitivity and technical variability, control is essential at every stage of the chain. This includes:

  • Ongoing quality monitoring
  • Verified sourcing and correct classification
  • Consistent processing standards
  • Segregated storage and transport
  • Reliable documentation and traceability

Behind the blend

Connex integrates compliance, quality, and market access for Category 2 animal fat. We source material from approved and audited suppliers, ensuring correct classification, documented origin, and compliance with EU animal by-product requirements. Each flow is fully traceable from the point of origin to final delivery.

On the quality side, Connex ensures specifications align with end-user requirements. We coordinate sampling, testing, and validation to maintain batch consistency and reduce operational risks during storage, transport, and downstream processing.

Commercially, we optimise the placement of Category 2 material in the most appropriate downstream markets by aligning feedstock characteristics with biodiesel and renewable fuel pathways, while managing logistical constraints and structuring contracts that reflect regulatory and technical realities.

Operationally, Connex manages the full chain, from supplier qualification and documentation control to logistics coordination and risk management.

In a market where value is driven as much by control as by volume, Connex ensures that Category 2 animal fat is not simply traded, but verified, compliant, and fit for purpose.
